My First WAPF Event

In December I discovered an organization that embodied everything I’ve been learning about for the past three years: Weston A. Price Foundation, or WAPF. Food, farming and the healing arts is what the organization encompasses. WAPF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to "restoring nutrient-dense foods to the American diet through education, research and activism". Whole foods can heal the body. Let’s get back to the basics and look into what our ancestors did.

WAPF has a podcast called Wise Traditions. Currently there’s 412 podcast episodes available to listen to ranging from topics of vaccines, root canals, glyphosate, fertility, raw milk and regenerative farming. I downloaded my first podcast in January and I’ve been listening to them non stop. I listened to a few current podcast episodes then went back to the beginning- 2016. I’m shocked that what they are discussing from 7 years ago is completely relevant to today! The topics being discussed are things I JUST learned about. I’m so new to this holistic health world and yet WAPF has been discussing it for decades.

The podcast recently had 10 million episode downloads. To celebrate, the president of WAPF, held a gathering at her 95 acre farm in southern Maryland.

Sally Fallon Morell, the president of WAPF runs P.A Bowen Farmstead with her husband. They use a natural old-fashioned technique with their farm that includes rotational grazing, very rare use of antibiotics and don’t use hormones, growth-enhancers, pesticides or herbicides.

The podcast celebration was held at the barn on the farm. I made sure to check out the farm store before the event began. There I picked up a variety of award winning raw cheeses including the Chesapeake Cheddar which won second place at the American Cheese Society competition. My favorite of the six I bought is the top left below: the Dreamy Creamy aged over 60 days.

I also picked up some raw milk to compare to our Creambrook raw milk we get weekly. Sally’s milk was the slightest bit creamier!

The podcast celebration included 130 people which consisted of all ages but all were like minded! Hilda, the podcast host and creator, recorded a live podcast episode during the event! There was a panel of 6 people that had been interviewed previously on podcasts. Holistic doctors, nutritionists and farmers discussed health and what we can do to improve our bodies and minds. Each person agreed that true health is acquired by whole foods.

A lovely banquet of sourdough bread, fruit , meat, cheese and live pâté was served. I told myself that I would try anything that was presented. The pâté was made with pork shoulder, heart, fat and bacon from the farm! I whispered to myself that this food would nourish my body and I would love it. I couldn’t believe it but I thoroughly enjoyed the concoction! To my surprise, there was no liver flavor whatsoever. Every item was fresh and either from P.A Bowen farmstead or another local farm.

After the main event Sally took about two dozen of us on a farm tour. She shared how rotational grazing worked, how predators were kept off the land and how the cows were milked. We met chickens, pigs, geese, cows and cats. A new calf was born during the event which was discovered during the tour. What an beautiful sight he was!

The Wise Traditions podcast is a great place to begin if you are just starting your holistic health journey. You are able to peruse the topics of each episode and chose based on your interests. Each episode is only 30-40 minutes long which makes them very easy to listen to! Please let me know if you chose to listen to them and which is your favorite!
